School Outreach

Our Campaign 2000 Outreach touched the lives of 156 teachers in the elementary, middle and high school levels of Los Angeles County. These teachers requested, and were exposed, to a program that teaches the principles and practices of nonviolence to their students. for which many of them committed to on a daily basis.

SNV-LA worked with two youth partners, Joshua Silverstein (Santa Monica College) and Chantal Jones (Hamilton High School) to develop and present a workshop, Practicing Nonviolence, for the youth conference entitled, "The Ripple Effect: a Two-Day Conference on Nonviolence," sponsored by the Los Angeles County Commission on Human Relations, The National Conference for Community and Justice and the Inglewood Coalition for Drug and Violence Prevention

SNV-LA staff facilitated staff development for the Steps Ahead Program at Martin Luther King Legacy Association.  The training addressed, "How can parents practice nonviolence with themselves and their children?" This staff work with parents who have pre-school children.

Community

State Senator Hayden's Cal/Gang Database Committee
Executive Director, Eisha Mason, served on State Senator Hayden's Cal/Gang Database Committee.  This group was charged with the responsibility of working with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department to develop processes whereby
    ·     youth would be informed that they are registered on the Cal/Gang Database
    ·     they could appeal being part of the database and
    ·     they could be removed from the database because they have indicated a change in
           lifestyle.

To date, the joint committee has partnership between the Sheriff's Department and the Gang Violence Bridging Project at Cal State LA that takes youth through 26 hours of training and admits them to Cal State LA as freshman.  The committee continues to work on the information and appeal processes.

SNV-LA is also a member of the Coalition for Police Accountability, a community coalition of over 50 local and national organizations for police reform in Los Angeles
