A
Force More Powerful: The Proof and Promise of Nonviolence:
A Panel Discussion was sponsored by SNV-LA to support
the PBS premiere of a two-part documentary, A Force
More Powerful. Hosted by Warren Olney, of KCRW, the

"Begins
With Me,"a day-long nonviolence training for educators,
introducing them to use the 64 Ways to Practice Nonviolence
Curriculum and Resource Guide (core concepts: nonviolence,
violence, culture, power), and the Kingian principles
of nonviolence
· Presented to
at LA High School, the Martin Luther King Jr. National
Historic Site
in
Atlanta and at Holman Church for SNVLA partners.
· Currently expanding
from 8 to 16 hours. We are seeking accreditation for
teacher
salary
points and developing a nonviolent classroom management
training.
Education / Contracts
SNV-LA collaborated with TRIBE to facilitate a series of six
workshops for Youth Opportunities Unlimited at a probation
school.
The Gas Company funded the translation of your 64 Ways to
Practice Nonviolence poster and the printing of 5000
4-color posters.
School Outreach
Our Campaign 2000 Outreach touched the lives of 156 teachers
in the elementary, middle and high school levels of
Los Angeles County. These teachers requested, and were
exposed, to a program that teaches the principles and
practices of nonviolence to their students. for which
many of them committed to on a daily basis.
SNV-LA worked with two youth partners, Joshua Silverstein
(Santa Monica College) and Chantal Jones (Hamilton High
School) to develop and present a workshop, Practicing
Nonviolence, for the youth conference entitled, "The
Ripple Effect: a Two-Day Conference on Nonviolence,"
sponsored by the Los Angeles County Commission on Human
Relations, The National Conference for Community and
Justice and the Inglewood Coalition for Drug and Violence
Prevention
SNV-LA staff facilitated staff development for the Steps Ahead
Program at Martin Luther King Legacy Association.
The training addressed, "How can parents practice
nonviolence with themselves and their children?"
This staff work with parents who have pre-school children.

Community
State
Senator Hayden's Cal/Gang Database Committee
Executive Director, Eisha Mason, served on State Senator
Hayden's Cal/Gang Database Committee. This group
was charged with the responsibility of working with the
Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department to develop processes
whereby
· youth
would be informed that they are registered on the Cal/Gang
Database
· they
could appeal being part of the database and
· they
could be removed from the database because they have indicated
a change in
lifestyle.
To date, the joint committee has partnership between the
Sheriff's Department and the Gang Violence Bridging
Project at Cal State LA that takes youth through 26
hours of training and admits them to Cal State LA as
freshman. The committee continues to work on the
information and appeal processes.
SNV-LA
is also a member of the Coalition for Police Accountability,
a community coalition of over 50 local and national
organizations for police reform in Los Angeles

Heroes
| During
the annual Season for Nonviolence campaign, A Season for
Nonviolence - Los Angeles and the Agape International
Center of Truth recognized eight local heroes who are
contributing to a world that honors the dignity and worth
of every human being. The heroes are:
· Laura Leigh Hughs, founder
of the Unusual Suspects (arts in youth camps)
·
Hugo Rasmussen, director of Veterans for Peace
·
Ed Massey, founder of Portraits of Hope (arts for hospitalized
childrena and the
elderly),
·
Alex Sanchez, director of Homies Unidos, a gang truce
organization serving
immigrant youth
·
Sylvia Rousseau, retiring principal of Santa Monica
High School
·
Lois Lee, founder of Children of the Night (services
for homeless young people
involved in prostitution and pornography)
·
Ron Johnson, founder of the National Family Life and
Education Center (serving
foster teens and other teen youth)
·
Deanne Tilton-Durfee, leader in child abuse prevention
and director of ICAN (LA
County Inter Agency Commission on Child Abuse and Neglect).

to be Forgottens
| SNV-LA
hosted a reception for the Southern California Gas Company
(SoCalGas). Here, SNV-LA presented SoCalGas with an award
for being an outstanding community partner. SoCalGas also
presented Eisha Mason (SNV-LA Executive Director) and
a number of her staff members with awards for their commitment
and passion to the advancement of nonviolence.
SNV-LA expanded to become the Center for the Advancement for
Nonviolence (CAN).
CAN established its 12 month and 24 month business plan.
